Well the last 4 weeks of my life have seen some pretty big changes! After surf coaching in Morocco for the last 4 months I’ve finally landed back in the backpacker bubble and over the course of 7 days I bounced from Morocco to Switzerland to Australia and then finally ended in New Zealand!
I’ve already posted about my 7 days of travel chaos so I won’t repeat myself!
Anyhow I’m super stoked about being in New Zealand and although I’ve only been here a week it’s been heaps good and I’m thoroughly enjoying myself! Needless to say there will be alot of exciting posts coming up over the next few weeks as I camper van through the south island and then backpack through the north.
But enough about that – here’s all my stats and budget type stuff for the last 31 days of travel….
Overland Distance; 1380.82kms
Flight Distance; 20973.69kms
Total Distance = 22354.51kms
Countries; Morocco, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand
Main Spots; Taghazout, Essouaria, Marrakech, Zurich, Flims Laax, Sydney, Christchurch, Queenstown, Te Anau, Doubtful Sound
Transport Taken; car, taxis, minibus, train, planes, boat, ski lift and free fall!
Flights – 3 in total = RAK-ZRH (Iberia), ZRH-SYD (Emirates), SYD-AKL (Emirates)
Money Breakdown
Morocco – £65 over 20 days = £3.25 per day (again all food and accommodation was paid for with work!)
Switzerland – £228.97 over just under 3 days = £76.32 per day
Australia – £35 in 12 hours…all on booze! = £35 per day
New Zealand – £256 over 6 days = £42.66 per day
+ £43 in airports across the total time for food, and duty free!
Total Spent = £627.97 over 31 days = £20.25 per day
…so I’m still under my £25 per day backpacking budget target despite some expensive splurges, I’ll have to keep an eye on my finances again though as I readjust to life on the road!
Cheapest Place – I’m not going to lie, the last few days in New Zealand have been super cheap because I’m travelling with my parents, and after not seeing me for over a year my mother is adamant I’m not paying for anything! (my Dad on the other hand doesn’t agree so much with her logic!) even so I’ve managed to spend quite a bit sorting out internet dongles, phone plans and activities
Most Expensive Place – Switzerland in general really, but that’s mainly due to the fact I spent alot of dollar on a couple days snowboarding and of course treating the girl to some nice meals out!
Biggest Splurge/Unforeseen Expense – Snowboarding – I think in total I spent around £100 on return train tickets and a days lift pass. My NZ budget shot up due to doing a skydive within my first week here though!
Highlight – This month has has a heap of highlights – from epic surf session through to amazing days of snowboarding and random 12 hour stopovers in Sydney! Seeing my parents for the first time in over a year though has got to win out, athough it’s on par with skydiving with my Dad!
Lowlight – much like the last few months goodbyes are always the lowlights! Saying goodbye to the girl knowing I wont see her for a few months sucked.
Top Shot
The sheer variety of the last month means I’ve got plenty of epic pictures to choose from – but I think this shot from Lake Tekapo in New Zealand is my favourite…it was shot on my first full day in NZ and has set the tone for the whole country so far!
What’s Next?
Well next month is shaping up to be heaps good! I’m bouncing around the south island some more here in New Zealand with the parents with a trip to Franz Josef Glacier being the main highlight in the next week or so. We’re parting ways mid month when they head home again via Singapore whilst I bounce up to the north island.
After some catch ups with my buddy Luke in Wellington I’m making a dash for the surf in Raglan and spending some serious time in the water!
I’ll finish up my time in NZ in the last few days of the month with a stop in Auckland (including catching up with some blogging buddies like Bev from Pack Your Passport) before leaving the land of the long white cloud behind for some epic Oz adventures…starting in Sydney…
Yeeeeewwwww!
Great post, it’s insightful to see want others spend on travelling! My husband and I averaged about £45-£50 per day on our trip through Southern Africa, and we were really splurging because its super cheap there :D
And I’m sorry you have to be away from your girl for so long, that’s really hard :( My husband and I are separated by an ocean at the moment while we wait for my visa to the states and I’m really really missing him!
I’m sure the wait will make seeing her again all the more amazing when you get back :D So excited to hear about your Australian travels, I adore Australia! :) Have fun
always good to compare isn’t it – especially if you’re planning a trip! I think most of my dollar goes on partying to be honest :)
it’ll suck being so far away from the girl – but she’s studying and I’m going to be busy surfing and travelling so we’re both pretty distracted!hahaha!
ooooo visa for the states hey – excited much?!
I love Oz too – stoked to get back there!
