hey Chris, very cool site! I was looking for travel buddies and landed on your page. Don’t you have any plans on visiting the Philippines? I’m planning on exploring my country as well as other Asian countries and I’m looking for some travel buddies along the way. Would you know anyone who are also travelling and are looking for new friends? I’d appreciate it if you respond to my email. Cheers!
hey Kim, indeed the Philippines is pretty high on my to do list, although I’m not sure when I’ll actually be fitting it in! When it comes to finding some travel buddies try GapYear.com – their community section is a great place to find fellow travellers. In fact I organised a roadtrip in Australia with 7 people I met on there!
Hi cris, i interested with ur traveling story, i like ur story wen u in gili trawangan its a beautiful place, im from indonesia and hope u came back here many island u can explore here. Warm greeting from indonesia
Hey Rino,
Glad you like the site! Gili T is beautiful, such a greta little place to be! Indonesia is one of my favourite spots so I’m sure I’ll be back again soon!
I just recently started planning my backpacking trips. I love to travel, and seeing you make it a reality is so beautiful! Thank you for the inspiration.
Hey Chris,
Firstly I have to say you’ve created such an amazing website. I am planning to go to Cambodia, Laos and possibly Vietnam this June/July and your tips and photos have made me so much more excited!
A hard question I know but do you think that it would be possible to do all three counties in a month?
Cheers Alexandra – stoked you like the site!
Hmmm…personally I think you could easily spend a month in each! My personal theory is that it’s better to travel a place well than to ‘skim travel’ a few…you can always go back. You could potentially fly into Vietnam and do haling bay in the north then get an internal flight (maybe air asia) to Cambodia and do a couple weeks there?
Laos was ok – but it’s not my favourite country to explore.
Thanks for the advice. My plan is to not really have a plan and move on when I’m ready so you might be right about only going to one country. I’ll just have to see what happens :)
I see you have a gaping hole in your travel here in South Africa, you’re missing out ;-)
Besides that I just wanted to say awesome blog and thanks for the inspiration, i’m seriously considering packing in the rat race in the near future and hitting the road!
I’m also a photographer (no qualification though) and curious about the kind of work you have picked up as a photographer and how you landed those jobs?
Indeed I do Barry – it’s been on my bucket list for a while now but the main objective would obviously be a Safari, and if I’m going to do that I’m going all out so I need to top up my funds a bit!haha!
Stoked that I’m inspiring you to head out and explore some more!
Photography wise a lot comes parcelled with the blog – I work with companies to produce promotional images, help out with stuff for their social media and occasionally pick up a few wedding or fashion jobs. Despite the degree photography has become a bit of a bolt on for other jobs really – it’s a great skill to have an definitely ups your chances of employment in my opinion.
Safari’s don’t have to be that expensive, I go to the Kruger Park often! That’s where most of the wildlife pics on my facebook page come from, check it out https://www.facebook.com/BarryTannerPhotography
If you need any advice on South Africa let me know.
This is a pretty magical site. I’ve made my bucket list a little bit longer after reading yours. So thanks for that!! Im headed to Cambodia to help out with a reef conservation program but the month before that I am free to travel around SE asia. Any suggestions on must see places/countries surrounding Cambodia? I know its wishful thinking but I’m hoping to find some surf spots…
Thanks for taking the time to put your thoughts into a computer!
Hey Charlotte,
Stoked to hear you like the site! Wow your Cambodia plans sound awesome – let me know how you get on!
In regards to your spare month if you’re looking to grab some surf I highly recommend heading to the Philippines (Siargoa Island…I posted about it earlier this month) or even Indonesia. You can reach both of them pretty cheaply and they’re the main options for waves.
If you want to be closer to Cambodia a month in Thailand is always heaps of fun – great diving there too!

Some great images there Barry – good work!
Awesome to know that it won’t set me back as much as I expect – what kind of numbers are we talking!?
Hey Chris,
Have you travelled Vietnam at all? Trying to decide between north and south or both. We have 12 days!!
Thanks.
J
Unfortunately I haven’t Jen – you could split your time and do an internal flight to link the two without having heaps of travel time though?
Hi Chris,
If you land on Sri Lanka, we are here for you with warm welcome. We are the first Backpacker Travel Partner in Sri Lanka.
Thanks
Namal
Thank Namal – I’ll keep that in mind! Sri Lanka is high on my to do list but not sure when I’ll finally make it there!
