After a lush weekend chillaxing on Magnetic Island we busted a groove on the Bruce Highway to reach our final destination – Cairns.
And this is where my Oz adventure finishes, where it started nearly a year ago.
We promptly checked into my favourite hostel in Australia – Gilligans. (there’s a review of it to be found HERE) After emptying the contents of Damos van into room 220 we promptly hit the downstairs bar for some 241 bargains – and the Cairns Carnage that started with the 121 Crew back in 2009 quickly found me again!
Double fisting vodka and beer me, Jimmy, Jonesy and Kez quickly found ourselves heading out into town to explore. Kez bailed early though and it was just me and the boys.
And when drunken guys hit Cairns there’s really only one place they head – the strip bars!
We detoured to Rhino bar first though – its infamous $3 all you can drink in an hour deal went down a treat on my last stay here, but unfortunately the place had gone bankrupt a mere week before our arrival! Epic fail!
Then we decided that $15 on a strip joint probably wasn’t the best decision given our state and after one of the strippers said Jonesy looked skanky!
So we were left wandering the streets trying to find a new plan.
It was about this point when 3 random girls hijacked our night and before we knew it we were at a room party in a hotel, in the penthouse! Happy days!
After getting bored me and Jimmy bailed with a bottle of vodka in tow a few hours later, then randomly found ourselves in the stairwell. This turned out to be a fire escape, and as the door slammed behind us we realised we were stuck in it!
Not knowing what hotel we were in we were stuck for a good 20 minutes before I had the sense to GPS us on the iPhone, google the hotel and call reception – god bless Apple!
A bemused receptionist eventually freed us from our concrete cave and we stumbled back along the esplanade towards home and a comfy bed.
An epic start to the end of my tour, it’s good to see Cairns is still as chaotic as ever!
