As part of my last trip to Sydney with my little brother in tow we teamed up with the crew from YHA Australia and after checking out the YHA Sydney Central we bounced over to one of the newest Australian YHAs – The Sydney Harbour YHA.
Now after travelling for over 4 years hostels and hotels are very much a part of my day to day lifestyle and it takes a lot to impress me – but this YHA really caught me off guard!
5* Views Without The 5* Price Tag
The biggest draw of the Sydney Harbour YHA is the location in the trendy area “The Rocks” – it’s within easy walking distance of Circular Quay, with it’s ferry service across the harbour to Manly and of course the icon of Australia – The Sydney Opera House.
However with being within walking distance comes another huge bonus – the views!
Once we’d checked into our room I threw open the curtains to discover I could actually see the Opera House from room…in fact I could actually see it from my bed!
I’ve travelled Australia quite a bit (in fact this was my 4th trip down under!) and I’ve photographed Sydney a lot but despite this I I was genuinely full of travel stoke and it really struck me that I was kicking back in Sydney!
It’s a weird feeling to try and explain but I spent much of the night getting out of bed and simply soaking in the views – it was nothing short of epic!
And it wasn’t just my room that framed the magical cityscape of Sydney – the Sydney Harbour YHA has gone all out with a pretty pimping rooftop terrace which offer up 180 degree views over the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and city skyline.
It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a cold beer, mingle and even cook up a BBQ and a great vantage point to photograph both day and night.
It’s the kind of view you expect from a 5* hotel, not a backpacker hostel!
…and if you don’t believe me they even have a live webcam stream of the view!
Steeped In History
One of the most quirky things about Sydney Harbour YHA is the fact it’s built hovering over an archaeological site! It’ll catch you slightly off guard when checking in as it almost resembles a building site!hahaha!
…but don’t worry there’s no noise or builder bum cracks on show here!
The excavation site itself showcases archeological remnants of colonial Sydney and there is plenty of things to see and learn if you wander around the ground floor of the hostel, it’s well worth spending some time checking out!
As you’d expect from the YHA Australia chain – and on par with my experiences at Melbourne Metro YHA and Sydney Central YHA – Sydney Harbour YHA came kitted out with all the facilities and extras you need for a more than comfortable stay.
Air conditioning. TV room, travel tour desk, free wifi (with the option to upgrade to in room, faster wifi) and of course that awesome rooftop terrace and BBQ area!
My twin room was modern, clean came with an en suite – perfect for a bit of flash packing goodness or a cheaper alternative to a hotel if you’re travelling with family or enjoy some more creature comforts without breaking your budget.
In fact even the dorms in Sydney Harbour YHA come with en suite – which is a welcome bonus!
Alongside Circular Quay is access to the railway too, so you can easily head to the airport or other parts of the city within a short distance of the hostel.
If you want 5* views, be within easy walking distance of some of Sydneys must see attractions and mingle with fellow travellers without breaking your budget Sydney Harbour YHA is an amazing choice and it’ll be my base in Sydney from now on I think!
Dorms start at $38AUD, privates at around $150AUD and the double room with Opera House view at $165AUD per night – but things get even cheaper if you hook yourself up with a YHA Membership card, which is a greta investment if you intend to use the YHA chain throughout your trip.
**PLEASE NOTE – I received a complimentary stay at Sydney Harbour YHA as part of my partnership with YHA Australia, but rest assured all opinions are honest and my own**
