REVIEW: Mojo Surf Camp Australia

Looking to learn to surf in Australia? We review Mojo Surf and their Sydney to Byron Bay Surf Trip based at Spot X Surf Camp…

Guest blogger Nick Griffiths came up to Byron from Sydney with the Mojo Surf Camp. So if your looking at learning to surf in Australia, or simply a more fun way to get up the coast from the big smoke check out this review…

Sydney is a great city, but after working there for three months I was well ready to see the back of it and get back onto the whole travelling scene. I had been recommended a surf tour from one of the travel agencies and liked what I saw and heard.

As a surfer already I was a little hesitant at the idea of having to practice my “pop up” whilst lying on a huge foamy on the beach, how-ever I was assured that it would not only benefit my surfing, but I would have an awesome time. So the scene was set, it was to be a five-day trip up to Byron bay stopping off at a couple surf camps on the way.

Surf Road Trip!

The Mojo Surf bus in all its pimped out glory was a wicked sight sitting in the middle of Sydney CBD and the driver looked even more out of place. With his beach blonde hair and general chilled out aroma he put me straight in the mood for some sun and surf. The first coach journey up to our first surf camp was a 6 hour drive, but with the movie, comfy seats and the odd amusing comment from the driver it went quickly and with out incident.

The next couple nights were to be spent out in a small self-contained surf haven where chilled was the aim of the game. Just a couple minute walk from one of the most stunning surf beaches I’ve ever step foot on and completely isolated. It was perfect after spending a few months in the organised chaos that is Sydney.

Meals were cooked up in a little building next to all the dorm rooms and we’d sit down as a group and eat a filling and healthy food three times a day. There was tea and coffee too for those who needed it after the previous night or after a tough session out on the waves.

The rooms were spacious and comfy, and considering how many people come through they were incredibly well maintained.

The Mojo Surf Lessons

The surfing was as always, great fun and the instruction were of top quality. The lessons were perfectly balanced with the tuition and the fun element that surfing is all about. Whooping and cheering was what could be mostly heard as another traveller had managed to get up to their feet and feel the awesome sensation of riding a wave.

After spending the day in the ocean we would head back for another great feed and then grab a couple beers and chill out around the camp fire. The staff made sure everything was done for us so all we had to do was sit down relax and listen to the songs, jokes and stories that others wanted to share.

Leaving the first spot was tough but necessary, it was an awesome place that I’ll never forget but there were still other places to see and surf.

Spot X Surf Camp

review mojo surf australia spot x surf camp tours backpackerSpot X is a little better known than the first camp and its indeed very different. Surrounded by holiday homes and based on a campsite it’s got a little more of a touristy feel to it, but in its own right it’s an awesome place. Lots more people mean for lots more fun and games.

As in the other camp the Mojo staff were brilliant and would bend over backwards to ensure our stay there was the best. The surfing tuition was not quite as personal as before but still of a high standard and as the beginning part had already been covered there was more of a focus on pushing everybody’s surfing now.

Days in the water were again followed by a good feed, healthy nutritious and with a wide range of different grub. Then it would be around the fire with a few drinks for as long as you wanted to last.

The dorm accommodation was again well maintained and comfy, I particularly liked how they kept us in the surfing feel of things with the named rooms, for example ‘mavericks’ and ‘jaws’. All in all Spot X Surf Camp was all you could ask for from a surf camp, perfectly relaxed.

The last afternoon of the trip was spent chilling out before our coach arrived to take us up to Byron, and for that I was grateful, because the surfing takes its toll when your doing it every day and not used to it.

Is Mojo Surf Worth It?

To summarise, the Mojo tour is a brilliant way to get from Sydney up to Byron bay. You’ll have an awesome time with some even more awesome people. Whether you can or can’t surf yet, definitely get involved. Value for money, this tour is the best – whether its food, people or surf.

At $735AUD the 5 day Sydney to Byron Bay Surf Trip option is  a great way get to grips with learning to surf as well as being a much more fun alternative to the overnight Greyhound Bus from Sydney to Byron Bay!

If you wanted to take it even further Mojo Surf also offer a 1 or 2 month Australia surf academy and even a zero to hero surf instructor training course at Spot X!

Out of 5 stars as a whole the Mojo surf tour gets a 5* – they didn’t let me down on anything!
